Let’s be honest with you, because that’s how we work. The forest around Las Catalinas is lovely — the trails are superb for hiking and biking, and on a good morning the howler monkeys announce themselves long before you see them, with iguanas, magpie-jays and plenty of dry-forest birds around the trails, without leaving town. If you’d like a naturalist to walk those trails with you and name what you’re seeing, we’ll happily do it.
But we won’t tell you it’s the same as the real thing. Las Catalinas sits in tropical dry forest — beautiful, but a relatively contained pocket of it. The Costa Rica that people travel across the world for — the river full of crocodiles and wading birds, the turquoise water of Tenorio, the cloud forest dripping with hummingbirds — is a short drive away, not out the back gate. An hour and fifteen minutes gets you to one of Central America’s great bird rivers. Two hours and a bit gets you to the rainforest.
That’s what we’re here for: you’re staying in the perfect base camp. We take you from it to where the country really opens up — and we bring you back in time for sunset over Playa Danta.
One thing worth knowing about Las Catalinas is how you actually get in and out — because it’s more than one road, and it’s the kind of thing only locals track. Besides the main route, there’s a rougher back way through Playa Zapotal, and — in the dry season only — a river crossing we call the Monkey Trail, which no map or GPS will hand you. When the rains raise that river it closes, and we plan around it. It’s part of what makes this walkable, Mediterranean-style village feel a little set apart — self-contained by design, about an hour and twenty from the airport. From here the ocean days, the mangrove canoe, the ATV and buggy trails, Palo Verde, Miravalles and the water combo all come together well.

This is the one we’d send a first-time visitor on. A boat safari down the Tempisque River through one of Central America’s great concentrations of birds — crocodiles basking on the banks, howler monkeys overhead, herons, storks and roseate spoonbills — with a guide who knows every one of them by name and by call. White Water Rafting on the Tenorio — about 1 hour 45 minutes
You have dry forest at your door and it is worth knowing. An hour and three quarters inland, the same province turns wet and loud: a river dropping through Class III–IV rapids, with forest crowding both banks. Our Pickup Area
Las Catalinas sits on Playa Danta, right in the middle of our northern Pacific pickup corridor — which runs from the Papagayo Peninsula in the north down to Hacienda Pinilla in the south. Wherever you’d like to go, we start at your door.
One local detail worth knowing, and the kind of thing only someone from here will tell you: there are two ways in and out of Las Catalinas. The shortcut through the forest — the road locals call the Monkey Road — crosses a river with no bridge. In the dry months it’s fine and it saves real time; once the rains come in properly, it isn’t passable, and the alternative route through private land closes at night. We know which road works in which season and at which hour, and we plan your day around it. You’ll simply be picked up on time and returned on time.
A note on transport: pickup and transport from Las Catalinas are included in your private tour. Just tell us your dates and what you’d love to see, and we’ll confirm everything.
Book three tours and your arrival transfer is on us
If you book three tours with us, we collect you at the airport when you land — that transfer is included, not discounted. Book four and we take you back for your departure flight as well.
Two conditions, and we would rather say them plainly than have you discover them later. The group has to be four people or more. And the group that rides in from the airport is the group that does the tours: if eight of you arrive in the van, the tours are for eight, not for four of the eight.
