The Arenal Day Trip is a private full day from the Guanacaste coast of Costa Rica to the Arenal rainforest: hanging bridges above the canopy, a guided walk where sloths actually live, and a cacao farm where the chocolate is ground by hand. It means about seven hours in the vehicle and a start before sunrise — from $450 per person, minimum 4 guests.
Seven hours in a vehicle for one day in the rainforest. We put that first because it is the part most operators leave for the small print, and because it is the honest measure of what this day asks of you. What you get in return is Arenal's forest — hanging bridges above the canopy, sloths where sloths actually live, and a cacao farm where the chocolate is ground in front of you. One vehicle, one guide, four guests minimum, and nobody else. If the driving is too much, there is a two-day version, and we will happily point you at it.

How long is the drive to Arenal?
Arenal is three and a half hours from the Guanacaste coast. There and back, that is seven hours in the vehicle, and it means leaving before sunrise.
Prefer to split the drive? Our Arenal & La Fortuna overnight combo turns this into a two-day trip, with a night near the volcano instead of the pre-dawn round trip.
We could bury that number further down the page. Most operators do. But you are going to find out at 5:30 in the morning either way, and we would rather you decide now, with the real number in front of you.

The volcano changes the forest
Arenal is a different country from the dry forest you are staying in. The air is heavier, the green is louder, and the trees are taller because it rains here in months when the coast does not see a drop. Sloths live in this forest at a density Guanacaste cannot match, and the cacao has been grown on these farms for generations.
You are not driving three and a half hours to see a mountain. You are driving to a forest that works differently from the one you can reach in ninety minutes.
What do you do on the Arenal day trip?
We do not stack this day. Three activities, unhurried, with time to stop when something moves.

What we do not do
No hot springs. Almost every Arenal day tour includes them, and we have left them out on purpose. With seven hours of driving, adding hot springs means rushing the three things you came for. We would rather do three things well than five things badly.
If the hot springs are what you want most, do not book this day — book the overnight below, where there is room for them.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the drive, really?
Three and a half hours each way. Departure is 6:00 am from the Papagayo Peninsula, Playa Hermosa, Playa Panamá, Playas del Coco and the RIU hotels; 5:30 am from everywhere else in Guanacaste. You are back in the evening.
Why are there no hot springs?
Because the day already has seven hours of driving in it. Adding hot springs would mean rushing the bridges, the sloths and the cacao farm. If the hot springs matter to you, the overnight option is the better fit — there is time for them there.
Will we see sloths?
Almost certainly. The forest around La Fortuna holds them at a density we do not have in Guanacaste, and your guide knows the trees they favour. A sloth barely moves, so you never find one by catching movement — you find it because the canopy has a shape you know, and something up there does not fit.
Is Arenal still erupting?
Not since 2010. Arenal erupted continuously for forty-two years — from July 1968 until October 2010 — which made it one of the longest-running eruptions in the western hemisphere. Since then it has been resting: steam from the summit craters, and nothing more. What you see today is the cone, the old lava fields you can walk across, and the forest that has grown back over them.
Anyone promising you lava at night is describing a decade that ended. The volcano is still classified as active and geologists expect it to wake up again eventually — but not on the day of your visit.
Do we go inside Arenal Volcano National Park?
No, and we would rather say so plainly. This day is built around three things near the volcano — the hanging bridges, the sloths and the cacao farm — with Arenal in view for most of it. There is no park entry and no volcano hike; neither fits alongside seven hours of driving.

Is it worth it with children?
The bridges and the cacao farm work very well with children. The drive is the hard part — a five-thirty start and seven hours in the car is a lot for a small child. Tell us their ages and we will tell you honestly whether we would do it.
When do we have to cancel by?
Seventy-two hours before your tour begins, counted from the start time and not the day. Cancel before that and your deposit comes back in full.
Can we combine it with other days?
Yes, and most people do. Tell us how long you are in Guanacaste and what you want to see, and we will build the week around it.
