OCEAN EXPERIENCE · GULF OF PAPAGAYO

Sunset Sailing Experience

Everyone on this coast will sell you a sunset. What almost nobody does is stay out for it — engine off, anchored, with dinner being cooked on board while the light goes and the sky keeps changing for another hour.

You get the same private catamaran and the same day on the water as any of our boat charters. What is different is when it happens. We time the whole thing around the sun, sail out while there is still light for swimming and snorkelling, and are in position long before the colour starts.

What You'll Experience

What the Coast Does at Dusk

Sunset here is not just a colour. It is a shift change, and once somebody points it out you cannot stop seeing it.

The birds go home. Brown pelicans and frigatebirds that spent the day working the Gulf head back toward the headlands to roost, usually low and in line. It is the most reliable wildlife of the evening and almost nobody thinks to look up.

The water goes still. The afternoon wind drops off as the land cools, which is why the sea is calmest at the end of the day. It is the smoothest ride we run.

Dolphins move in. Bottlenose and spotted dolphins live in this Gulf year-round and often come closer to the surface as the light fades. Never guaranteed — but this is the hour they are most likely to show.

And the coast itself changes with the season. In the dry months the headlands turn gold and the forest drops its leaves. From the first rains onward those same hills go deep green and stay that way into November. Same coastline, two completely different photographs.

We do not sell animal sightings. What we can tell you is what this coast usually does at this hour, and put you in the right place to see it.

Choosing Your Evening

The same boat, two kinds of evening.

Standard is the sail done properly: transport both ways, snacks and fresh fruit, an open bar of beer and wine, swimming and snorkelling, and the anchor down for the sunset. Four hours.

Premium is the one people book for anniversaries, proposals and honeymoons. Five hours, a private chef cooking on board, a premium open bar, and fresh ceviche made while the light goes. It is the version where you are still out on the water eating dinner after the sun has gone.

Either can also be extended into a full eight-hour day — the whole catamaran experience, ending in the sunset instead of the afternoon.

The table below shows the options. Prices cover seven guests; the boat itself carries up to twenty, so tell us how many of you there are and we will quote it.

Sunset Sailing — Pricing

From $2,250 — for up to 7 guests. Private 42-foot catamaran, sunset sail. Price includes taxes, card payment, and your crew.

PackageFrom
Standard sunset sail$2,250
Premium sunset sail (chef aboard)$3,700

Ask us about timing — sunset shifts through the year, and we set departure to match.

Before You Book

Departure is set to the day’s sunset, so it shifts through the year — usually mid-to-late afternoon. We confirm your exact pick-up time when you book.

It’s one of the most popular reasons people book it. Tell us in advance and we’ll help set it up quietly.

Yes — we anchor for a sunset swim before the light goes, with the bar open.

That’s the whole point. Papagayo faces west, so the sun sets over open ocean with no land in the way.

Same boat, different day. The daytime trip is built around snorkeling, caves and water activities; the sunset sail is built around the evening light and the ride back.

The sail is beautiful regardless, and Papagayo skies usually clear by evening. In genuine force majeure we reschedule or refund.
