The Best of Guanacaste, Costa Rica

Three Landscapes.
One Private Guide.

The best things to do in Guanacaste, Costa Rica span three very different worlds: the calm Pacific waters of the Gulf of Papagayo, the volcanic highlands of Rincón de la Vieja and Miravalles, and the wildlife-rich wetlands along the Río Tempisque. Every tour departs from Playas del Coco as a fully private experience for your group only — no strangers, no shared vans, no guide splitting attention between sixteen people. The same naturalist who spent 30 years learning Guanacaste, Costa Rica’s trails drives to your door and stays with you all day.

Where in Guanacaste, Costa Rica

What are the three zones of Guanacaste?

Guanacaste, Costa Rica is not one landscape — it is three. Knowing the zones helps you pick the right day.

0–45 min from Coco
Zone 1

Pacific Coast & Gulf of Papagayo

The Gulf of Papagayo is one of the Pacific’s calmest and most biodiverse stretches of ocean. The dry Guanacaste, Costa Rica coast means clear skies almost year-round — which is why sport fishing, catamaran sailing and ATV tours through volcanic backcountry all work here even in September.

Best for: Catamaran · Sport Fishing · ATV & Buggy · Sunset Sailing
1–2 h from Coco
Zone 2

Volcanic Highlands

The flanks of Rincón de la Vieja and Miravalles are where Guanacaste, Costa Rica turns dramatic — boiling mud pools, geothermal hot springs, hidden waterfalls and cloud-edge forest that most visitors never reach. Access is better with a private guide who has been going up these trails for decades.

Best for: Rincón de la Vieja Combo · Miravalles · La Leona Waterfall · White Water Rafting
1.5–2.5 h from Coco
Zone 3

Wetlands & Rainforest Lowlands

Ninety minutes inland from the dry Guanacaste, Costa Rica coast, the landscape changes. The Río Tempisque opens into a Ramsar wetland of international importance — black sandbars dense with jabiru storks, mangrove tunnels at eye level. Further east, the Tenorio rainforest turns green, wet and loud: a morning with seven to ten sloths is a normal count.

Best for: Palo Verde · Wildlife Canoe Safari · Rainforest Combo · Rafting Tenorio

How do you choose the right tour?

Three questions that narrow it down faster than browsing every tour.

01

How much time do you have?

Most tours run full-day (7–8 hours) and include everything — transport, guide, meals, entrance fees. A few run half-day.

  • Full day: Palo Verde, Canoe Safari, Rafting, Catamarán, Rincón de la Vieja, Rainforest Combo
  • 2+ days: La Fortuna Overnight, Family Four Pack

Wildlife or adrenaline — or both?

The tours split cleanly. Some days you go slow and quiet. Some days you go fast. A few combine both in one itinerary.

  • Wildlife-first: Palo Verde, Canoe Safari, Rainforest Combo, Birding tours
  • Adrenaline-first: ATV, Rafting, Rincón de la Vieja, Sport Fishing
  • Both: Miravalles (hot springs + wildlife), Family Four Pack, La Leona
03

Land, water, or ocean?

Guanacaste, Costa Rica offers all three environments within two hours of Playas del Coco. Pick the one that calls to your group.

  • Land & forest: ATV, Rainforest Combo, Rincón de la Vieja, Miravalles, Birding

The price you see is the price you pay: no credit card surcharge.
Are tours in Guanacaste, Costa Rica private or shared group departures?+
Every single tour is 100% private. Your group travels with a dedicated naturalist guide — no strangers, no fixed group departures, no waiting on others. You set the pace, you choose what to spend extra time on, and you go where the wildlife takes you. This is Guanadreams CR’s core commitment: private nature experiences for every guest.
How far are the tours from Playas del Coco or Tamarindo?+
All tours include private door-to-door transport from your hotel in the Guanacaste, Costa Rica area. From Playas del Coco: Zone 1 tours (ATV, ocean) are 0–45 minutes. Zone 2 tours (Rincón de la Vieja, Miravalles, La Leona) are 1–2 hours. Zone 3 tours (Palo Verde, Canoe Safari, Rainforest Combo, Rafting) are 1.5–2.5 hours. From Tamarindo, add approximately 30–40 minutes to each estimate. The guide picks you up, drives you there, and brings you home — no rental car needed.
What is the best time of year to visit Guanacaste, Costa Rica?+
The dry season (December through April) offers guaranteed blue skies and perfect conditions for ocean activities and ATV tours. The green season (May through November) is Guanacaste, Costa Rica at its wildest — waterfalls at full force, birds at maximum activity, and far fewer tourists on every trail. Wildlife tours are exceptional year-round. The Tenorio River for rafting peaks in September–October. December through March is peak nesting season for marine birds in Palo Verde National Park.
Are these tours suitable for children and families?+
Most tours are designed for any physically mobile guest, including children aged 6 and older. The Family Fun Four Pack was built specifically for multi-generational groups. Wildlife tours — Palo Verde, Canoe Safari, Rainforest Combo — are ideal for curious children who respond to a naturalist guide who makes wildlife observation feel like a story. The ATV adventure has a minimum age of 12 to drive. White water rafting requires participants to be at least 10 years old. Your guide adjusts the day’s pace to the youngest member of the group.

Ocean charters include captain and crew, snorkeling equipment, and food and drinks on board. There is no credit card surcharge — the price you see is the price you pay.
Can I combine multiple tours into one trip?+
Yes — and most guests with 3 or more days do exactly this. The sample itineraries above show the most popular combinations. Your guide maintains continuity across days, which means the wildlife observation builds on itself: what you learned in Palo Verde informs what you notice in the Rainforest Combo. Multi-day combinations are priced as separate tours; there is no package surcharge for booking several days together.
Do I need to be physically fit for these tours in Guanacaste, Costa Rica?+
The wildlife boat safaris and canoe tours require no particular fitness — you sit, observe and paddle at a gentle pace. The ATV tour requires the ability to handle off-road vehicle controls and handle moderate vibration. Rafting requires the ability to follow paddle commands and hold a seated position during rapids. Waterfall hikes to La Leona involve 45–60 minutes of walking on uneven terrain. Your guide assesses the group on the day and adjusts the trail or activity level to match.
What is the cancellation policy for Guanacaste, Costa Rica tours?+
Day tours (land-based) require twenty-four hours’ notice for a full refund. Boat charters require seventy-two hours’ notice. Multi-day tours and La Fortuna/Arenal trips also require seventy-two hours. If Guanadreams CR cancels for safety or weather reasons, you receive one hundred percent of your payment back — always.
