Questions parents ask
How many days do you need in Costa Rica with kids?
Seven days works well from one hotel: four guided days, a free day, and the arrival and departure days. For Guanacaste, Costa Rica, we usually recommend 7 to 8 days. With 8, add a second free beach day. With 6, drop the free day. To add Arenal Volcano, turn days 4 and 5 into one night in La Fortuna.
How do you get around Costa Rica with kids?
In a private air-conditioned vehicle, so you never rent a car or drive. For families of up to six, your guide is also the driver; from seven, a separate driver comes along. Every seat has a seat belt and every vehicle we use is insured and operates with ICT and CTP permits. We pick you up at your hotel lobby each morning and bring you back the same day.
What should we pack for Costa Rica with kids?
Sneakers or closed shoes for the rainforest and Rincón de la Vieja (not flip-flops), swimsuits, a light rain jacket, hats, insect repellent and sunscreen. Pack a change of clothes for the waterfall and hot springs days. Our What to Pack guide has the full list.
When is the best time to visit Costa Rica with kids?
This itinerary runs all year. December to April is the dry season in Guanacaste, Costa Rica; from December the Papagayo winds cool the sea, so we snorkel in sheltered bays where the water stays clearer. May to November is the green season. Normal rain doesn't cancel a tour, and in October and November, when the Llanos de Cortés waterfall often closes, we have a swap ready.
Where should we stay in Costa Rica with kids?
One hotel on the coast of Guanacaste, Costa Rica, for the whole week: Papagayo, Playas del Coco, Playa Hermosa, Conchal or Tamarindo. All-inclusive resorts work well, and we pick up at the lobby. From Papagayo, Coco or Hermosa no drive is longer than 1 h 45; from Conchal or Tamarindo, the rainforest and Rincón de la Vieja days add about 35 minutes to an hour each way. We recommend hotels but don't book them.
What can you do in Costa Rica with kids?
On this trip: a riverboat in Palo Verde to look for crocodiles and monkeys, snorkeling from a private catamaran, a swim at the Llanos de Cortés waterfall, wild sloths and frogs in the Tenorio Rainforest, and boiling mud pots and hot springs at Rincón de la Vieja. On the free day you can add ziplining, horseback riding and ATVs, or the La Leona waterfall hike for kids from about 8.
Is Costa Rica safe for families?
Costa Rica is one of the safest countries in Latin America. On this trip you don't drive, a guide is with you on every land tour, and every vehicle we use is insured and operates with ICT and CTP permits. Swim at calm beaches, not big-surf ones like Playa Grande or Avellanas, and keep away from estuaries, where crocodiles live. Touching or holding wild animals isn't allowed, and monkeys are best watched from a distance.
How much does a week in Costa Rica with kids cost?
We quote one closed price for your family, not a price per activity, and send it within 24 hours. It covers the private vehicle and guide, entrance fees, the boats, lunch on land tour days and taxes. Children under 3 travel free and ages 3 to 5 pay half on land tours, and with four or more travelers airport transfers are included. Your hotel is booked and paid separately.
