7-Day Guanacaste Itinerary: The Perfect Costa Rica Week

Ziplining over the rainforest canyon on the Buena Vista combo tour at Rincón de la Vieja, Costa Rica

How many days do you need in Guanacaste? For first-time visitors, seven days hits the sweet spot: enough time to experience the region’s incredible diversity—rainforests, volcanoes, rivers, wildlife, and Pacific beaches—without rushing.

We’ve designed hundreds of custom itineraries for travelers, and this 7-day plan reflects how we actually recommend structuring a week here. It balances high-energy adventure days with gentler ones, groups experiences by region to minimize travel time, and leaves room to breathe. Every day is built around a real experience we offer, and every one can be adjusted to your pace and interests.

Think of this as a starting point—your private, flexible framework for an unforgettable week in Costa Rica’s most diverse province.

Day 1: Arrival in Liberia & Settling In

Fly into Liberia International Airport (LIR)—your gateway to Guanacaste and far closer to the region’s highlights than San José. After landing, we’ll handle your private transfer to your accommodation.

Take today to ease in. Settle into your hotel, feel the warm Guanacaste air, and enjoy your first Pacific sunset. No rush—your adventure begins tomorrow.

Day 2: Rainforest Combo — Río Celeste, Sloths & Hanging Bridges

Start strong with our signature rainforest day—three unforgettable experiences woven into one.

Witness the impossible turquoise of Río Celeste, deep in the Tenorio rainforest. Walk among the treetops on hanging bridges, taking in the canopy from a whole new perspective. And along the way, meet the rainforest’s most beloved resident: the sloth, along with monkeys, birds, and more.

It’s a full, rich day that captures everything magical about Costa Rica’s rainforest—color, wildlife, and wonder.

Day 3: Palo Verde National Park & Cultural Immersion

After yesterday’s full rainforest day, ease into something more relaxed but just as rewarding.

Cruise the Tempisque River through Palo Verde National Park, one of Central America’s most important bird sanctuaries. As you glide along the water, watch crocodiles bask on the riverbanks and countless bird species fill the sky. It’s a peaceful, scenic river cruise—easy on the body, rich on the eyes.

Pair it with a taste of authentic Guanacaste culture: local traditions, flavors, and the warm hospitality the region is famous for. A gentle, soulful day.

Day 4: White Water Rafting on the Tenorio River

Now that you’re settled in, it’s time for adrenaline. The Tenorio River delivers thrilling Class III–IV white water rafting through gorgeous rainforest canyons—the perfect blend of excitement and natural beauty.

Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned rafter, our expert guides make it safe, exhilarating, and unforgettable. Expect splashing rapids, calm stretches to drink in the scenery, and plenty of laughter along the way.

Day 5: Buena Vista Combo — The Complete Adventure Day

Today is the full package: an all-in-one adventure day at Buena Vista, near Rincón de la Vieja, where nature, adrenaline, culture, and wellness come together in one unforgettable experience.

The Buena Vista combo includes it all:

  • 🌿 Nature — walk the Los Higuerones hanging bridges, explore the El Saíno natural reserve, and take in the Salitral waterfall.
  • 🪂 Adventure — soar on the ziplines, race down the natural waterslide, and ride horseback through the countryside.
  • 🎭 Culture — visit a traditional trapiche (sugarcane mill), the Guaitil pottery workshop, enjoy a meal at La Fonda, and savor locally grown gourmet coffee.
  • 💆 Wellness — soak in volcanic hot springs and treat yourself to a natural volcanic mud bath.

And here’s the best part: it’s entirely flexible. The combo includes every activity, but if there’s anything you’d rather skip, you can. Prefer to linger longer in the hot springs instead of riding horseback? Want to trade the waterslide for more time at the pottery workshop? It’s your day—do as much or as little as you like. Nothing is mandatory; everything is yours to choose.

It’s the perfect way to experience the many faces of Guanacaste in a single, well-rounded day.

Day 6: ATV Adventure Through the Backcountry

Get your heart racing one more time on an off-road ATV adventure. Ride through Guanacaste’s dramatic backcountry—dusty trails, river crossings, hidden viewpoints, and panoramic landscapes far from the tourist path.

It’s raw, exhilarating, and a completely different way to experience the land—wind in your face, freedom in every turn.

Day 7: Departure

Every great trip comes to an end. Depending on your flight time, enjoy a slow morning—one last coffee, one last look at the Guanacaste sky.

When you’re ready, we’ll arrange your private transfer back to Liberia International Airport, making your final day as smooth and stress-free as the rest of your week. Pura vida—until next time.

How to Customize This Itinerary

This 7-day plan is a framework, not a rulebook. Here’s how travelers commonly adapt it:

  • Shorter on time? A 5-day version keeps the Rainforest Combo, Palo Verde, rafting, and one adventure day.
  • Traveling with kids? We swap in gentler experiences—calmer wildlife encounters, river cruises, and beach time.
  • Adventure-focused? We can stack more adrenaline across the week: rafting, ATV, Buena Vista, and volcano hikes.
  • Want more relaxation? We build in spa mornings, slow beach days, and sunset sailings.
  • Day trips & extensions? Monteverde Cloud Forest and Arenal Volcano are reachable as full-day excursions. And if you have more time, many travelers pair Guanacaste with 4–5 days in La Fortuna to experience Arenal Volcano, hot springs, and waterfalls.

Because every experience we offer is private, your itinerary flexes around you—your interests, your pace, your group.

How Many Days Is Enough?

Trip LengthWhat You Can Cover
3–4 daysOne or two highlights (Rainforest Combo + a beach, or rafting + wildlife)
5 daysA solid mix: rainforest, culture, rafting, and adventure
7 daysThe complete Guanacaste experience (this itinerary)
10+ daysGuanacaste + day trips to Monteverde, Arenal, or the southern coast

For most first-time visitors, 7 days in Guanacaste delivers the perfect balance—diverse, immersive, and unrushed.
