There's a moment when you wade in and the water is almost too blue to be real — a soft, milky turquoise that looks painted on. This is Río Celeste, famous for turning that impossible shade of blue, and you're standing in a private stretch downstream where you're actually allowed to swim — not the roped-off national-park section, but a quiet spot that's yours to enjoy. The color is at its most vivid when it hasn't rained hard for a day or two; heavy rain stirs up sediment and dulls it to grey, so we aim for clear mornings when the blue is strongest. The water runs cool and the spot asks for a little surefootedness — it's not the right fit if you have knee trouble or use a wheelchair — but for most people it's an easy, unforgettable dip. And because the spot is private, there's no rush: float and linger as long as you like.

The blue is most vivid when it hasn't rained heavily — clear mornings are the sweet spot.
