Río Celeste Blue River Swim

There's a moment when you wade in and the water is almost too blue to be real — a soft, milky turquoise that looks painted on. This is Río Celeste, famous for turning that impossible shade of blue, and you're standing in a private stretch downstream where you're actually allowed to swim — not the roped-off national-park section, but a quiet spot that's yours to enjoy. The color is at its most vivid when it hasn't rained hard for a day or two; heavy rain stirs up sediment and dulls it to grey, so we aim for clear mornings when the blue is strongest. The water runs cool and the spot asks for a little surefootedness — it's not the right fit if you have knee trouble or use a wheelchair — but for most people it's an easy, unforgettable dip. And because the spot is private, there's no rush: float and linger as long as you like.

Inside Tenorio National Park, no — swimming in the river is prohibited to protect it. We take you to a private spot downstream where swimming is allowed, so you can actually float and cool off in the blue water.
It’s an optical effect: volcanic minerals from the Tenorio volcano scatter sunlight, turning the water a milky turquoise. It’s most vivid when the river is calm and clear.
It’s cool and refreshing rather than icy — perfect on a warm day. Bring a towel and you’ll warm up quickly afterward.
It’s a short rainforest trail with some uneven ground and a rustic footbridge. Manageable for most visitors, but it isn’t wheelchair accessible and isn’t recommended if you have knee problems.
On dry mornings. After heavy rain the river can muddy and temporarily lose its color, so we watch conditions and advise the best timing for the clearest blue.
