How to Choose a Private Tour Operator in Guanacaste, Costa Rica
Seven things to check before you pay, from a local operator. Yes, we are one, so use these questions on us too.

To choose a private tour operator in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, check seven things: who guides you, ICT certification, ICT and CTP permits with insured vehicles, what private really means, the full price, honest drive times and honest wildlife promises. Ask before you pay. A good operator answers all seven clearly and in writing.
We are Guanadreams CR, a family-run private tour operator founded in 2014 and based in Playas del Coco, Guanacaste, Costa Rica. So read this knowing that we sell what we describe. We wrote it so you can test any operator, us included, in a few WhatsApp messages.
By the Guanadreams team, led by Miller Contreras, naturalist guide and wildlife photographer, born and raised in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Last verified November 2026.
Who will actually guide you?
Ask who will guide your day, because the company that sells a tour is not always the one that runs it. Ask whether that person is a naturalist guide and whether a separate driver comes along or the guide also drives.
A good guide gives you context, not only names: the culture, the land, how the forest works. With us, the person who answers you is the person who guides you.
Are the guides certified by the ICT?
They should be, so ask directly. The ICT is the Instituto Costarricense de Turismo, or Costa Rican Tourism Institute, and a serious operator tells you without hesitation whether your guide is certified by it. Our guides are.
Do the vehicles have permits and insurance?
Tourist transport in Costa Rica needs a permit from the ICT and then from the CTP, the Consejo de Transporte Público or Public Transport Council. Ask whether the vehicle carrying your family has both, and whether it is insured.
Permits
We operate with ICT and CTP permits.
Insurance
Every vehicle we use is insured with the INS, the national insurer of Costa Rica.
Seat belts
A seat belt at every seat.
What does private really mean?
Private should mean your group is never combined with strangers: your guide, your vehicle, your pace. It does not mean you will have every place to yourself, and an honest operator tells you that before you pay.
Here is what we tell our own guests. The boat at Palo Verde National Park is shared, you will meet other visitors on a zipline, and rafting shares the river with other groups.
Is the price the full price?
Ask for one total for your whole group, and ask what is left out. With us, most private day tours in Guanacaste, Costa Rica cost US$500 to US$1,000 for a group of two, taxes and hotel pickup included, with no card surcharge. Tips are not included.
Then ask how cancellation works, in writing. Ours is simple:
| What you booked | Cancel for a full refund |
|---|---|
| Day tours on land | Twenty-four hours before the start time |
| Boat charters, birding days, multi-day trips and La Fortuna | Seventy-two hours |
| We cancel for safety | 100% back, always |
We do not cancel for normal seasonal rain, only for a storm or hurricane influence that compromises safety. All our prices are on the facts and 2026–27 prices page, and this guide compares private and shared costs.
Are the drive times honest for your hotel?
Ask for the drive from your own hotel, because the same tour can mean a very different day. These are our times by road, each way, from four parts of the Guanacaste coast to the Tenorio Rainforest and Río Celeste.
| Starting from | About, each way |
|---|---|
| RIU Guanacaste & RIU Palace | 1 hour 45 minutes |
| Reserva Conchal | 2 hours 20 minutes |
| Tamarindo | 2 hours 30 minutes |
| Hacienda Pinilla | 2 hours 45 minutes |
Does it promise what the place can deliver?
It should promise only what the land can give. You will see wildlife on a good day out in Costa Rica; what no honest guide can promise is which species. If you hear one of these, ask again.
| If you hear | What is true here |
|---|---|
| “Guaranteed” animals | The forest has the last word. Tell your guide what you hope to see before you start. |
| Wild sloths on the Guanacaste coast | The coast is dry forest. Wild sloths are inland, in the Tenorio Rainforest. |
| Swimming in Río Celeste inside the national park | Swimming is not allowed in the park. Our days use a private point on the river. |
| The rainforest of Palo Verde | Palo Verde is dry and transitional forest, with gallery forest along the Tempisque River. |

Choosing an operator: quick questions
It depends on what you want to do and where you are staying, so we will not give you a single name, least of all our own. Pick the operator that answers the seven checks on this page clearly and in writing, and whose recent reviews agree with what it tells you.
Certification is issued by the ICT, the Costa Rican Tourism Institute, so ask each operator directly whether your guide holds it. Our guides at Guanadreams CR are certified by the ICT.
A shared tour fits if you are on a tight budget or personal attention does not matter much to you. A private tour fits if you want to stay longer with what interests you, ask every question and move at your own pace.
Ask for a total for your group that shows taxes and hotel pickup. With us, most private day tours cost US$500 to US$1,000 for a group of two, taxes and hotel pickup included, with no card surcharge. Tips are not included.
Either can work, as long as you get the same answers. Booking directly with a local operator lets you ask who will guide you and change the plan with the person running the day. Ask the seven checks on this page whichever way you book.
