Palo Verde Wetlands & Tempisque River

Where the Tempisque River meets the dry forest of Guanacaste, one of Costa Rica's great wetlands comes alive. Palo Verde is a haven for water birds and wildlife, and the river that runs through it is among the best places in the country to watch crocodiles bask on the banks. A boat cruise here isn't a checklist stop — it's a slow drift through a living wetland, with a guide who knows where the herons wade and when the migratory flocks arrive.

The timing shapes what you'll see. In the dry season, from December to April, the wetland concentrates birds into an extraordinary spectacle — over 300 species pass through these waters, and the dry months bring some of the best birding in Guanacaste. In the green season, the river swells and thousands of migratory birds settle in. You may share the boat with a few other families, but your guide stays with you the whole way — and if you'd prefer the river to yourselves, a fully private cruise can be arranged in advance for an added cost.

Beyond the water, this is hacienda country. We pair the cruise with a taste of the culture that grew up around these lands — a visit to a traditional village and a tasting of Guanacaste's own rum, distilled the old way from sugarcane. River, wildlife, and the living heritage of the Tempisque basin, in one unhurried day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the boat ride private just for our group?

The river cruise is usually shared with a few other visitors, but your guide stays dedicated to your group the whole time — pointing out wildlife, answering your questions, and setting the pace for you. If you’d prefer the boat entirely to yourselves, we can arrange a fully private cruise in advance for an added cost.

Are crocodile sightings guaranteed?

Crocodile sightings are extremely common on the Tempisque River — one of the best spots in Costa Rica.

Best time to visit Palo Verde?

Dry season (Dec–Apr) is ideal for bird watching. Wet season brings thousands of migratory birds — equally spectacular.

How much does the private Palo Verde experience cost?

Our private Palo Verde experience starts at $500 per private group of 2 guests, taxes included. The day is built around a River Cruise Safari on the Río Tempisque with your own dedicated naturalist guide, private transportation, lunch and bottled water. The riverboat itself may be shared with a few other visitors, but your guide stays exclusively with your group the entire time — and if you would like the boat entirely to yourselves, we can arrange a fully private cruise for an added cost. Hotel pickup is included from Tamarindo, Las Catalinas, Reserva Conchal, the Riu Palace and Riu Guanacaste resorts at Playa Matapalo, the Waldorf Astoria, Playas del Coco, Playa Hermosa, Playa Panamá, the Papagayo Peninsula and Liberia. Larger groups enjoy better per-guest rates, and you can add the Cultural Experience or the Rum Experience from $200 per private group each. We will confirm your exact quote on WhatsApp based on your group size, chosen add-ons and pickup location.
