Why Horizontes

Birding Without
the Long Drive

Most good birding in Guanacaste, Costa Rica means an hour or more on the road. Horizontes is the exception for the Coco and Papagayo hotels. It is an experimental forestry station of the Área de Conservación Guanacaste, about 73 km² where former farmland is being returned to dry forest, and that mix of quiet back roads, grassland, gallery forest and dry-forest patches is exactly what dry-forest birds like. From October to April the northern migrants add to the list.
