Best Time to Visit Costa Rica, by Region
There is no single best time — the Pacific and Caribbean coasts run on almost opposite seasons. Here is the honest, region-by-region answer from a naturalist guide based in Guanacaste.

There is no single best time to visit Costa Rica — it depends on which coast. The Pacific side, including Guanacaste where we guide, is dry from December to April and green from May to November. The Caribbean runs almost opposite, with its driest, sunniest spells around September–October and February–March. For a first trip built around sun and beaches, December to April on the Pacific is the safest bet.
Costa Rica is small enough to drive across in a day, but its weather is not one story — it is two. A mountain spine runs down the middle of the country, and the Pacific and Caribbean coasts sit on opposite sides of it, on opposite rain schedules. So the honest answer to “when should I go?” is really “which coast are you visiting?”
The Pacific northwest — Guanacaste, where we live and guide — is the driest, most weather-reliable corner of the country. The Caribbean is the exception to almost everything below. Here is the year broken down region by region, so you can match your dates to the coast you have in mind.

Costa Rica by region, at a glance
| Region | Best / driest months | Wettest months | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| North Pacific (Guanacaste) | Dec–Apr | Sep–Oct | Reliable sun, beaches, wildlife, best value in green season |
| Central & South Pacific (Manuel Antonio, Osa) | Dec–Apr | Sep–Nov | Rainforest and beach together, Corcovado wildlife |
| Caribbean (Tortuguero, Puerto Viejo) | Feb–Mar & Sep–Oct | Nov–Jan, Jun–Jul | Sea turtles, Afro-Caribbean culture, sun when the Pacific is wet |
| Central Valley & Highlands (Arenal, Monteverde) | Dec–Apr | Sep–Oct | Volcanoes, cloud forest, cooler climate |
When is the dry season in Costa Rica?
On the Pacific side, the dry season runs from December to April, and it is most reliable in the northwest, in Guanacaste. The further south you go down the Pacific, the more rain the dry season carries. The Caribbean coast does not follow this pattern at all: it has no true dry season, only drier windows around February to March and again in September to October.
North Pacific and Guanacaste: the sunniest, driest region
Guanacaste is the driest, sunniest corner of Costa Rica. From December to April you can count on day after day of sun, with highs around 31 to 33°C. The green season, May to November, brings sunny mornings and short afternoon showers that leave the forest lush, the rivers full and the wildlife at its most active, at noticeably lower prices. If you want the most weather certainty for a first trip, this is the region to base yourself in. See our month-by-month breakdown in the best time to visit Guanacaste guide.

Central and South Pacific
From Jacó and Manuel Antonio down to the Osa Peninsula, the Pacific stays greener and more humid, with the same December to April dry season but noticeably more rain than Guanacaste. The reward is rainforest right beside the beach and, in the far south, the extraordinary wildlife of Corcovado. Expect some afternoon rain even in the drier months as you move south.
The Caribbean: the exception to the rule
The Caribbean coast, from Tortuguero to Puerto Viejo, breaks every rule above. It can rain in any month, but the driest, sunniest windows are February to March and September to October — exactly when parts of the Pacific are at their wettest. That makes the Caribbean a smart choice for a September or October trip. It is also the coast for green turtle nesting in Tortuguero, roughly July to October.

Central Valley, Arenal and Monteverde
The highlands are cooler and spring-like year-round. The December to April dry season is the easiest time for the Arenal volcano and the Monteverde cloud forest, though the cloud forest is often misty whatever the month — which is exactly what makes it magic. Nights are cool, so pack a layer.

The honest answer: when should you go?
For a first trip with weather certainty: December to April on the Pacific, and Guanacaste above all. For fewer crowds, lower prices and the most active wildlife: the Pacific green season, May to November, with sunny mornings most days. For a September or October trip: lean toward Guanacaste early mornings or the Caribbean, which is often in one of its drier windows then. Whichever coast you pick, we can build the days around it.

Best time to visit Costa Rica — quick questions
The Pacific northwest, Guanacaste, is the sunniest and driest region of the country, especially from December to April. The Caribbean is wetter overall and has no true dry season, only drier windows around February to March and September to October.
The Pacific green season, roughly May to November, has the lowest prices of the year, with September and October the cheapest. You trade some afternoon rain for lush scenery, active wildlife and far fewer crowds.
Yes. On the Pacific the green season usually means sunny mornings and short afternoon showers, not all-day rain, so early activities still get full days. The payoff is lower prices, greener landscapes and the most active wildlife of the year.
